Childhood Anxiety

What is anxiety?

The first point to make is that anxiety is a normal part of our human make-up and in certain instances it is quite useful.

It is the body’s biological defense system. It kicks in to warn us of potential danger and triggers an automatic response to deal with the situation. It automatically prepares our body to take quick action (fight or flight).

Anxiety only becomes a problem when it occurs too strongly, for too long, too often or in the wrong situations. For example, when there is no real expectation, stressful or life threatening situation.

Childhood anxiety occurs in about one-in-four children at sometime between the ages of 13 and 18.

Anxiety can produce some very ugly sensations around our mind and body, which can enhance the fear factor. Although these are very real sensations, they are actually controlled by our mind.

Anxiety symptoms include:

  • Repetitive or compulsive behaviours
  • Wanting to remain isolated
  • Physical symptoms such as belly ache, tingly hands and light headedness
  • Difficulty concentrating
  • Restlessness
  • Irritability
  • Wanting to remain isolated
  • Increased fear of situations or doing things
  • Becoming increasingly needy or clingy
  • Avoiding public places
  • Fatigue
  • Sleep Disruption
  • A reduction or in reaction – switching off or refusing to speak

Children cannot just ‘grow out of’ anxious behaviours, and CBT has proven one of the most effective treatments for anxiety disorders.

Left untreated, anxiety in children can cause problems in school, at home and with peers as well as continue into adulthood.
